Comcare, as the Commonwealth Safety Regulator, made a decision to issue an enforceable undertaking (EU) rather than prosecute Defence for failure to provide adequate management of hazardous substances in the workplace. CSI was contracted to review the existing policy and procedures early in the process and provide updates to both policy and create a range of procedures. The EU was expanded rapidly after the size of the problem was determined and the materials initially drafted were used as the basis for newer policy and procedures in line with harmonised Work Health and Safety (WHS) legislation that was being developed. The original work by CSI was the foundation of future work by the hazardous chemicals team.
