This was an interesting industrial hygiene review of the generation of inorganic lead dusts resulting in elevated blood lead levels in Special Forces training. The investigation involved visiting a number of indoor firing ranges, dental laboratories, soldering training facilities and industrial workplaces where lead is used or exposure is possible. Measurements were taken and analysed, results obtained and reports prepared recommending risk control methods and the establishment of internal standards where no Australian Standards existed. Policies and implementation procedures were developed and have been issued as Defence mandated requirements through the Defence WHS manual.
